Bischof and van Essen speak about the possible winners in Astana

Sometimes we really get amazed but in same time even more respectful to some people. Ole Bischof of Germany, Olympic Champion, world-class judoka and even retired still very active among judo community and always had time for our readers. Before World's in Astana we prepared for some some amusing analysis, result prediction.

To not hang out only with the athletes and coaches, we stepped out little bit from the mat. Again with us is Hans van Essen the "master of stats", besides that we did some small prediction with him, he took some of his time to gave us few answers.

What are the positive and negative things of having World Championships every year?

Positive is that each year there is a clear highlight to peak for the athletes. Also for the media there must be an annual highlight to look out for. I see no negative points. I would suggest to make the international calendar a bit more balanced with less high level events, but enough events where the second generation can peak.

Judo rules changed a lot since London 2012, no leg grabbing, no bridge etc. Do you think “KOKA” should be back and why?

I think judo has changed positively, although leg grabbing was spectacular judoka adjust and the creative can benefit, you can see the development the best in the lightweight categories where countries as Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan benefit in a creative way with new techniques. No Koka, because a score must be clear, the less possibilities the easier is it to understand the game which is sometimes indeed arbitrary, it’s a judge sport.

On TV judo looks just amazing, high quality product, but we still faces sometimes with empty tribunes, what would be your move to get people into the venue?

Approach it even more with a marketing vision. I do understand that more events are held in judo countries such as Russian area nations as the crowd is willing to visit and to pay for good quality judo. However once you have the people more can be done in the presentation with screens, with sponsor and crowd awareness, with small flying airplanes in the tribunes giving out tickets or benefits dropping it in the tribunes. More camera’s for fans at home. Although judo is one of the sports that is covered pretty well, still it can be better. At world level not bad, at continental level sometimes dreadfully poor. Good coverage also brings more enthusiasm in the stadium if you can work with screens, offer quality information so people know the athletes. Step by step things are improving.
