Salient points  on transition from newaza to tachi-waza

a) When uke is completely flat on his front, it is newaza (tori cannot score from a throw done with uke in this position)

b) When uke's belly is off the ground but both knees and both elbows are still on the mat, it is always a newaza situation. Tori cannot score from a throw here.

c) When one of uke's legs are off the ground, it is a tachi-waza situation.

d) When uke's arms are straight (elbows off the mat), it is also a tachi-waza situation

e) If uke is originally in a newaza situation and tori lifts him up to do a throw, there is no score but newaza continues.
